SAHIWAL: Eight villagers, including women, attacked the Pera force and tore their uniforms during an operation to vacate a village sewerage and drainage line illegally occupied by a family at village 62/12-L, Tehsil Chichawatni, on Wednesday.

The scuffle erupted when Pera personnel moved to clear the village drainage line, which had been encroached upon by a family.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) Chichawatni Javed Lakhwera told Dawn that three main suspects involved in the attack were arrested by Okawali Bangla Police, while a case was registered against eight people.

Reports said several villagers had lodged written complaints against Sadaqat Ali and his family for unlawfully occupying the village common sewerage line and blocking the drainage system. Following an inquiry, AC Javed Lakhwera ordered the drainage line to be vacated.

On the AC’s instructions, Pera Enforcement Officer Mohsin Iqbal along with his team reached the site to carry out the operation. Sadaqat Ali, Ali, and Akram, along with six unidentified individuals including four women allegedly attacked the officials with bamboos, sticks, and bricks.

One of the Pera sergeants Hasanain Rashid’s uniform was torn during the assault. The attackers fled after creating chaos.

Police were informed of the incident, and on the AC’s direction, Okawali Bangla Police registered a case against the suspects under sections 186, 506, 148, 149, and 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Mohsin Iqbal.

The Okawala station house officer said police are raiding at different places to arrest the remaining suspects.
