KARACHI: A minor boy died of suffocation on Monday when a fire erupted in a school established inside a Malir house, police and rescue services officials said.
Khokhrapar SHO Mohammed Ashfaq told Dawn that the fire broke out in the school at around 1:25pm. As a result, two-and-half-year-old Ahad Nadir Shah suffered minor burns. However, he died due to suffocation.
The officer said the boy’s mother was a teacher at the school. She was busy teaching the students when the incident took place. He said the police have initiated legal proceedings but the exact cause of fire was not known.
Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan told Dawn that the fire erupted on the ground floor of the bungalow where the school was set up.
He said their rescue team rushed to the spot and two fire tenders controlled the fire after hectic efforts.
Meanwhile, a huge fire erupted in a godown containing mattresses foam in Landhi’s Sherpao Colony on Monday.
It was controlled by six fire tenders after hectic efforts lasting for several hours. No one was reported hurt, added Mr Khan.
