KARACHI: The city administration has linked the increase in fresh milk price to quality, requiring dairy farmers and retailers to provide a written guarantee of supplying unadulterated and 100 per cent pure milk.

Official sources said that the decision to this effect was taken on Thursday at a meeting held to review the report of a review committee set up to check the quality of milk.

The meeting, chaired by Commissioner of Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, was attended among others by representatives of dairy farmers, wholesalers and retailers, representatives of consumer rights organisations and the Sindh Food Authority.

The meeting participants were informed about the committee’s report. The participants resolved that any increase in milk prices would be put on hold until dairy farmers, wholesalers, and retailers provide assurances on the quality of milk being supplied.

During the meeting, three key conditions were laid out that needed to be met before any consideration could be given to increasing milk price. Firstly, dairy farmers and suppliers would need to provide guarantee of pure quality of milk, secondly, a system for rapid testing of milk would need to be implemented, and thirdly, a thorough calculation of production and supply costs would be required.

The meeting participants also decided that dairy farmers, wholesalers, and retailers would develop a joint standard operating procedure with the administration, outlining measures to ensure hygienic milk supply and penalties for violators.
