LAHORE: The Punjab government on Wednesday announced that the water supply systems will be improved and non-functional filtration plants restored across the province, while 10 new projects will be launched for the provision of clean drinking water to the people.

Punjab Housing Department Secretary Noor ul Amin Mengal constituted a special committee to prepare recommendations regarding repairs, restoration of water supply system and approval of funds for the purpose.

A housing department spokesperson said the initiative would help resolve the long-standing issues related to water supply systems promptly.

He said the new committee would determine the allocation of funds for the repairs and rehabilitation of rural water supply schemes, while recommendations would also be made for the release of funds for the repairs and reactivation of non-functional filtration plants.

The committee comprises the housing special secretary as convener, while the additional secretary technical and chief engineers for North and South are its members. The deputy secretary technical will serve as the committee’s secretary.

The spokesperson says the provision of clean and safe drinking water to the people is being ensured and protecting them from contaminated and saline water remains the department’s top priority.

He says that complaints related to water supply will be addressed immediately to ensure the provision of better and safe drinking water to the public at all levels.

Mr Mengal also chaired another meeting in which 10 projects, related to the provision of clean drinking water, were presented for approval under the Departmental Development Sub-Committee. Under these projects, the water supply and filtration systems in various districts of the province will be upgraded on modern lines.

According to the spokesperson, water filtration plants will be installed in seven tehsils of Bahawalnagar, including Minchinabad, Chishtian, Haroonabad, Fort Abbas, Yazman, and Bahawalnagar. Similarly, in the Bahawalpur district’s Hasilpur tehsil, a cluster-based water supply system will be introduced under three schemes.
