QUETTA: Unknown armed men attacked and set fire to a police station in Kachhi district, while a check post was targeted with hand grenades in the Western Bypass area of the provincial capital, Quetta, on Tuesday evening.

Officials said nearly two dozen armed men, carrying heavy weapons, attacked the Khattan Police Station in Kachhi district. The station had been recently established in a building of the Livestock Department and handed to the police after the merger of levies personnel into police.

The assailants entered the two-room police station, burning official records and furniture. They also took away two rifles, including an SMG and a G-3, along with a mobile phone and a private motorcycle before fleeing.

“Owing to the large number of assailants, the former levies personnel, who were in a nearby private house, could not effectively respond,” a senior official said, adding that no loss of life or injury was reported.

Local police and security forces reached the site soon after receiving information about the incident and launched a joint search operation to trace the attackers. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Sibi Range is further investigating the case.

Meanwhile, unidentified men attacked a security forces check post in Western Bypass area of Quetta with hand grenades. “The motorcyclists fired two grenades at the post, which exploded close by but caused no casualties,” police officials said.

Security personnel deployed at the post retaliated with fire; however, the attackers managed to escape after hurling the grenades. Security forces later launched a search operation in the area.
