LOWER DIR: A former member of local peace committee was shot dead in Maidan area on Monday night, police and locals said on Tuesday.

They said Haji Azam Khan, a former peace committee member, was gunned down at his house in Mirgam Bala area of Maidan.

Relatives said the deceased was sitting in the courtyard when unknown assailants opened fire from the rooftop, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police reached the scene soon after the incident, cordoned off the area, and collected evidence. A case has been registered against unidentified attackers and investigation is underway.

Earlier on Saturday, a former member of village defence committee, Almas Khan, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Gumbat Banda area. He was on way to Kumbar Bazaar in his vehicle when attackers opened fire on him near Kas Gumbat Banda, killing him on the spot.
