PESHAWAR, June 1: The People’s Party Parliamentarians and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal have reached a seat adjustment agreement for the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council elections to be held on July 11.

Addressing a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, deputy secretary-general of AJK MMA and a candidate for LA-41 Noorul Bari said the MMA and PPP would not field candidates against each other in six constituencies.

Mr Bari, flanked by AJK PPP president Muhibullah, expressed the hope that people of Azad Kashmir would elect candidates to be fielded by the MMA and said that the alliance after coming to power would establish an Islamic welfare system in the valley.

“We will set up a base camp in AKJ to support the ongoing movement in held Kashmir,” he said and pledged to launch a struggle for the rights of Kashmiri refugees.

Mr Bari, who is also local chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, alleged that the government had failed to support the Kashmiris’ struggle for independence.

He said the AJK government had failed in rehabilitation of people affected by the earthquake last year. He regretted that quake victims had not yet got relief money.

Alleging irregularities in reconstruction of government buildings, he said the MMA after coming to power would initiate an inquiry against corrupt officials.

In reply to a question, he said elections would be held under the supervision of Pakistan Army and added that the old voters’ list would be updated.
