• Asim Munir lauds Cairo’s role in regional peace
• Egyptian leader appreciates Pakistan’s role in promoting Ummah’s interests
CAIRO: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Saturday stressed the need for stronger strategic coordination and broader cooperation in security, technology and the economy, Pakistan’s military media wing said, Dawn.com reported.
In a meeting at the Itihadia Presidential Palace in Cairo, the two leaders “underlined the importance of coordination on matters of mutual strategic interests and strengthening people-to-people contacts,” according to a statement from Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
ISPR said COAS Munir praised Egypt’s “key role in the region’s peace and stability”, while alSisi “expressed appreciation for
Pakistan’s positive and proactive contributions to matters of importance for the world and Muslim ummah”.
The pair “exchanged views on bilateral relations” and reaffirmed what the statement described as a long-standing friendship, with a shared intent to broaden cooperation particularly in socioeconomic engagement, technology and security.
The meeting came amid a broader push by both countries to upgrade ties.
Last week, Pakistan and Egypt agreed to enhance cooperation in the maritime and industrial sectors, aiming to foster joint ventures and promote their blue economies.
In May, alSisi told Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a phone call that Cairo sought stronger bilateral relations.
The ISPR said the talks in Cairo concluded on a positive note, with both sides confident that a strengthened economic and security dialogue would support peace and stability in Pakistan, Egypt and the wider region.
Field Marshal Munir, who is on an official visit to Egypt, also met senior defence officials on Friday, where he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to closer defence and military cooperation.
He laid a wreath at the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier and at the grave of former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, and held a separate meeting with the Grand Imam of alAzhar, Sheikh Ahmed elTayeb.
