ISLAMABAD, June 1: The Supreme Court disposed of 1,753 cases in May as against institution of 1,210 cases, reducing the pendency to 14,594.

An official statement said backlog in the apex court on May 1 was 15,137 cases that was added to by 1,210 fresh cases during the month.

“The strategy of the court under the guidance of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to prepare cause lists in advance and discourage adjournment worked well during the last month and served the purpose of accelerating disposal of the cases.”

Judges of the apex court also worked hard as a team to achieve the desired target of disposal of cases expeditiously and diminish the backlog.

At the principal seat in Islamabad, 1,036 cases were decided as compared to the newly registered 640 cases. At the Lahore branch registry 200 cases were disposed of as compared to fresh institution of 381 cases. While at the branch registry Karachi 90 cases were disposed of and 87 instituted. At Peshawar branch registry, 423 cases were disposed of against newly registered 80 cases while at Quetta branch registry four cases were disposed of and 22 new cases were registered.—Staff Reporter
