PESHAWAR, May 27: The NWFP government is planning to introduce a new computerised driving licence system which will deter motorists from casual or habitual flouting of traffic rules, officials said here.

The officials said that the law department had been directed to introduce amendments in the existing Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965, while the information technology department had been asked to design computer software for the existing driving licence system.

An official of the IT department said that the government had earmarked Rs22.7 million for both the software and provision of equipment to the transport directorate and its sub-offices in all district headquarters.

The official said that the new license system was likely to be introduced across the province within next six to seven months and the transport directorate would appoint staff in all district headquarters of the province.

He said that the main data bank would be located at the provincial traffic headquarters in the office of the assistant inspector general of police (traffic) and would be connected with all 24 districts. These 24 district headquarters would be connected with the main server installed at the traffic headquarters in Peshawar through the internet.

All information and particulars about the licence holders would be fed into the main data bank and would be accessible to the each district headquarters.

Sources said that the proposed driving licence system had been discussed with the federal government but so far there had been no response from it.

AIG Traffic NWFP told Dawn the driving licence system would be based on points which would be deducted in case a motorist committed a traffic offence.
