LAHORE, May 26: Senior police officers will have a meeting with executives from all cell phone companies on Saturday (today) for a proposed coordinated effort to control street crimes.

City police chief additional IG Khwaja Khalid Farooq told Dawn by phone that cell phone snatching had been one of the major street crimes, which required special attention.

The executives already had a meeting with SPs of the Lahore police to discuss at length the cell phone-snatching phenomenon in the city. “We actually want the cell phone companies to block through individual codes all the snatched cell phone sets if we provide them a complete data,” IGP Farooq said.

He believed the step would certainly discourage the cell phone snatching incidents. It would also help trace the gangs or individuals involved in such crimes, he added.
