KARACHI, May 26: The Board of Intermediate Education, the University of Karachi and the Sindh Board of Technical Education have postponed their respective exams scheduled for May 27 in the wake of a strike call given by Ahle Sunnat Rahbar Council, a combination of representatives of nine religious parties.

However, the city government education department’s senior official said in the evening that educational institutions, both in public and private sectors, would function as usual on Saturday as the Sindh Education Department had not notified any holiday on May 27.

The BIE controller of examination, Prof Abdul Aziz announced that papers of HSC Annual Examinations 2006, which were to be held on May 27, for pre-engineering, pre medical; and science general, home economics and commerce groups had been postponed.

Now the exams would b held on June 10 at the same time in the morning and the evening shifts respectively, while order of examinations on other days would remain unchanged, said the notification.

SBTE Controller of Examination Prof Syed Sirajul Islam Bukhari said that papers of technical school certificate exams which were scheduled for May 27 had been postponed. New dates for the postponed exams would be announced later, said Mr Bukhari.

A spokesman for Karachi University said that semesters exams of the university had been postponed in view of the prevailing situation. New dates for the postponed papers would be given by the authorities concerned later, the spokesman added.

Dow University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Dr Masood Hameed Khan said that classes at the two campuses of the university, Dow Medical College and Sindh Medical College, would be conducted as usual on May 27.

When contacted, the registrar of NED University of Engineering and Technology, Javed Aziz Khan, said that academic activities would be held as usual on the campus on May 27.
