ISLAMABAD : The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has paid rich tributes to their legendary union leader, Nisar Osmani, whose 31st death anniversary is being observed on Thursday.
“Today, we remember the fearless and upright legendary journalist Nisar Osmani who left us while fighting for freedom of expression and rights of the working Journalists on this day 31 years ago,” a statement issued by PFUJ said.
Terming him as a “shining example of journalistic integrity”, the statement said that Osmani sahib left an indelible mark not only on the journalists community but also on democratic struggle.
PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari in a joint statement said that Nisar Osmani was born in a year that coincided with the enactment of the oppressive ‘Press Act of 1931’ by the British government and Usmani dedicated his life for fighting against oppressive press laws and advocating for democratic rights.
As a journalist, lecturer, and trade unionist, he fearlessly challenged military dictators, including General Ziaul Haq, and civilian governments alike.
Nisar Osmani’s distinguished career spanned over four decades, during which he worked tirelessly to promote press freedom, ethical journalism, and workers’ rights.
His unwavering commitment to his principles earned him countrywide and international respect not only from journalists community but also from human rights organisations.
“Not only his struggle for freedom of press and democratic rights will always be remembered but the PFUJ would always strive to follow in his footsteps,” the statement said.
“His courage, integrity, and dedication to democratic values inspire us to continue our struggle for press freedom and workers’ rights,” the PFUJ said, adding “We not only honour his legacy but reaffirm our commitment to upholding the principles he stood for.”
“As we pay tribute to this remarkable individual, we draw inspiration from his fearless courage, humility, and intellectual honesty,” the PFUJ statement said adding, “His legacy continues to motivate journalists and democracy advocates in Pakistan”.
PFUJ expressed the confidence that Nisar Osmani’s memory will inspire the future generations to uphold the values of a free press, democratic rights, and intellectual freedom.
