KARACHI: Police on Thursday registered a case regarding the ‘targeted’ killing of a policeman in Bin Qasim a day earlier.
The 35-year-old head constable, Mithro Khan, posted at Shah Latif Town police station, was gunned down by armed pillion riders near Pipri. Afterwards, a little-known group claimed responsibility for it.
This was the second ‘targeted’ killing incident in Malir district this month. Earlier, on Aug 18, ASI Mohammed Khan Abro was gunned down by armed pillion riders when he disembarked from his car outside his home in the Bin Qasim area.
Bin Qasim SHO Faisal Rafiq said the case had been registered against unidentified suspects under terror and murder charges.
Counter-Terrorism Department’s senior official, Raja Umer Khattab, told Dawn that they suspected involvement of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the killing of head-constable Mithro.
He said that for the last five to six months, claims of responsibility had been made by different militant groups, which were being checked and monitored by the CTD.
He said since the social media platform of the TTP was blocked, new platforms were being used by militants.
He termed certain claims doubtful.
Elaborating, the CTD official said that in two terror cases, claims were made through social media none of them had even taken place.
Giving an example, he recalled that claim of responsibility for the recent killing of three men in Faqeera Goth within the limits of the SITE Superhighway Industrial Area was made. One of the victims was stated to be an informer of law enforcers. Initial probe, he said, suggested that the triple murder was an outcome of some personal enmity, and not a terror incident.
