KARACHI: A married woman, initially thought to have died by suicide, was raped and murdered allegedly by her brother-in-law within the remit of the Malir Cantonment police station, officials said on Tuesday.

Area SHO Agha Abdul Rasheed told Dawn that the woman’s brother-in-law had been arrested.

Police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told Dawn that the body of 30-year-old Sadia was brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre from Zakaria Goth on Monday.

“Post-mortem findings are suggestive of sexual violence,” she said, adding that the woman was strangled.

The SHO said that the deceased woman’s husband is a truck driver who was in Balochistan at the time of the incident.

He said families of the both the brothers live in the same house. Initially, the suspect had told the police that her sister-in-law had taken her own life by hanging herself. However, after autopsy, it transpired that she was raped and killed.
