ISLAMABAD, May 20: Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Attaur Rehman has said that the discretionary power of provincial governors to appoint universities’ vice-chancellors has been taken back on the directives of President Musharraf.

“Now vice-chancellors will be appointed by a Scholars Search Committee to be formed by the HEC,” Mr Rehman told journalists here on Saturday.

He said the committee would select three persons for a post of vice-chancellor, out of which one would be selected on the basis of merit.

Provincial governor would be bound to issue the notification of appointment of the person recommended by the committee for vice-chancellor’s post, he added.

He said that President Gen Pervez Musharraf was the chancellor of universities working under the federation and the committee would send him three names for appointing one.—Online
