PESHAWAR, May 20: Federal Investigation Agency personnel on Saturday arrested two people when they were attempting to travel to Hong Kong via Dubai with documents seeking political asylum, FIA sources said.

Imran, a worker of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) from Sialkot district, came to the immigration counter at the Peshawar airport to get his documents checked.

On his passport, he had mentioned ‘business’ as purpose of his visit to Hong Kong. However, he could not satisfy the FIA officials about the nature of his trade, said assistant director Inamullah Khan Gandapur.

Imran’s bag was checked and documents containing anti-government material and indicating his intention to seek political asylum in Hong Kong were found.

The official said they also found a copy of an FIR registered with the Kotwali police in Sialkot on April 14 against some local PML-N leaders and workers, including Imran. The PML men were charged under section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order. He said Imran had some other documents supporting his asylum request.

Meanwhile, Imran’s companion, Qaiser Saleem, a resident of Baguwali village in Gujranwala district, was also taken into custody.
