KARACHI: A man was killed and two others sustained critical burn injuries when a fire broke out at a petrol pump in Malir on Tuesday afternoon, rescue services officials said.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan told Dawn that the blaze, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, erupted at around 3:48pm at the petrol pump in the Malir-15 area.

He said all three victims suffered severe burn injuries and were rushed to a hospital, where one of them died. The other two remain in critical condition.

Rescue 1122’s Command and Control Centre responded promptly and deployed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation fire trucks from a nearby station. Mr Khan added that four fire tenders were actively engaged in the firefighting operation, which was still underway at the time of reporting.

He further said that both the petrol pump staff and Malir SSP Abdul Khaliq Pirzada informed the rescue team that an electrical short circuit had triggered the fire.
