KARACHI: The Sindh government and Worldwide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) have decided to launch the “Recharge Pakistan” project in Manchar Lake as part of a joint strategy to address environmental threats, including floods and droughts.

In this regard, a delegation of the WWF-P’s Recharge Pakistan project called on Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro. The delegation included Senior Director Fawad Hayat, retired Brigadier Muhammad Amjad Azad and other experts.

During the meeting, discussions were held on the restoration of Manchar Lake, mitigating environmental risks and improving the lives of the local population.

Mr Hayat said that the $8 million Recharge Pakistan project will be completed in seven years in 2031.

He said the project aims to protect Manchar Lake from challenges such as super floods, heavy rainfall, heatwaves and droughts. The initiative includes excavating and restoring 30 kilometres of the lake’s ancient waterways, along with interventions in areas like Gaji Shah, Wahi Pandhi, Qasbo, Tando Rahim Khan, Haji Khan Shahani, Halili Nadi and Chhani.

Minister Shoro praised the project, assuring that the government would fully support efforts to clean the lake, improve the environment and enhance the livelihoods of local communities.
