KARACHI: A man was booked and arrested for subjecting his teenage wife to brutal torture and a sexual assault in Lyari.

Officials said on Monday that the 19-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital in critical condition and the man has been booked in an attempted murder and rape case.

They said that the woman was married on June 15 and on the third day she was taken to a private hospital following a violent sexual assault by her husband. Later, her in-laws took her back to their home. On July 4, she was brought to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi in a critical condition.

“She is now in a coma. Findings of the physical examination are consistent with sexual violence,” police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed told Dawn.

On July 5, a case was registered at the Baghdadi police station under Sections 376-B (punishment for rape) and 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the woman’s family against the man.

Two men shot dead for ‘honour’

Two men were shot dead and another was wounded in the Manghopir area on Monday, police said.

They added that Shaman, 25, and Ishaq Balach, 30, were killed while Habibullah, 35, was wounded.

Manghopir SHO Imran Ahmed Khan told Dawn that Shaman was involved with a girl from his native Bolan, Balochistan, and they left their homes and came to Karachi a couple of days ago.

They were living with their relatives near Gulshan Chowk in Mohammed Khan Colony.

He said that as per an initial probe, the girl’s brother, Ghulam Sarwar, and other relatives traced the couple, killed the duo and took her away with them.

The bodies and wounded were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The officer said they were waiting for heirs of the victims to lodge an FIR to initiate legal proceedings.
