BAHAWALPUR, May 13: Schoolchildren marched on Saturday on the Ahmadpur East Road in protest against the felling of trees in the name of dualisation of the road.

The march was organised by the Friends of Trees Society and participated in by the students of Alpina and Riazul Itfal schools, lawyers and notables of the city in the scorching heat. A large number of passers-by also joined the march.

Society chairperson Katherine Abbasi and other speakers urged the officials to plant saplings so that they could replace the felled trees. A ban should also be imposed on cutting of trees in residential areas, they demanded.

The district government recently felled a large number of trees from Fowara Chowk to Karachi Morr to dualise the road.

IMPOSTOR HELD: Police nabbed an impostor and his two accomplices on Saturday.

According to DPO Arif Nawaz, accused Abdullah of Okara, introduced himself as a PTV director. He and his accomplices Sajjad and Amjad visited the city on Friday for the second time. They allegedly blackmailed DO (health) and MSs of THQ hospitals of Hasilpur and Yazman.

The DPO said the accused was nabbed when he attempted to flee from the office of acting DCO Ikramullah.

POLICE STATIONS: The DPO said at a departmental meeting three new model police stations would be set up at a cost of Rs30 million in the district.

He said FIR registration centres would start working in the offices of DPO and SDPO on May 15 on the directives of the chief minister.

Besides, a vigilance cell headed by additional SP has been set up to redress the people’s grievances.

GARMENTS EXHIBITION: Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Mahboob Nasir inaugurated a 15-day exhibition of garments of an international repute institution here on Saturday.

He expressed the hope that economic activity in the region would get a boost.
