PESHAWAR: The federal government has formed a committee to revive the jirga system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for an effective alternate dispute mechanism.

The committee, constituted on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will examine proposals to revive the jirga system and strengthen civil administration in the province.

The committee include Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and States and Frontier Regions Amir Muqam, Minister for Law Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal and Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi.

Mr Muqam has been appointed as the committee’s convener and Mr Tarar as co-convener.

Besides, the KP chief minister and governor or their representatives, KP chief secretary and IGP, former chief secretary Shakil Durrani, former KP IGP Salahuddin Khan Mehsud and SIFC Secretary Dr Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan have also been included in the committee.

The secretaries of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan and States and Frontier Regions, Planning and Development, Economic Affairs, Interior and Overseas Pakistanis will also be a part of the committee.

A senior official of the provincial government told Dawn that tribal elders had requested the prime minister to revive the jirga system during a meeting earlier this month.

The meeting was held earlier this month during the prime minister’s visit to Peshawar.
