KARACHI: Two young men drowned in the sea within the remit of the Mauripur police station on Sunday, police and rescue workers said.

Keamari SSP Faizan Ali told Dawn that three friends, who were swimming in the sea near Sandspit, were swept away by strong currents.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson said in a statement that Ali Hasan and Farhan Kamran were rescued and taken to a nearby medical centre, where doctors declared Hasan dead. Kamran was moved to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment in an unconscious condition.

The spokesperson said their third friend, Jamil Naveed, is feared drowned and a search for him will resume on Monday morning.

The incident took place at around 9:30am. The youths came to Sandsput beach for picnic from the North Karachi area.

The Keamri SSP said that the police would approach the city commissioner for announcing a ban on swimming in the sea to avoid such tragedies in the future.
