MULTAN, May 10: Divisional Superintendent Irfan Gohar said on Wednesday that one special cargo coach would be attached to the Shah Rukn-i-Alam and Bahauddin Zakariya express for transportation of mango from Multan to Karachi during season.

He told a delegation of Mango Growers Association (MGA) led by its president Syed Zahid Gardezi that each coach would have capacity to carry 10 tons of mango. It would take 12 to 14 hours to reach Karachi.

He said apart from the initiative to boost mango export, a long term strategy would also be devised to ensure transportation of the delicious fruit.

Mr Gohar asked the divisional commercial officer to prepare a comprehensive report for a long term strategy after consulting all the stakeholders so that it should be submitted to the high-ups for approval.

The MGA delegation appreciated the railway’s initiative and discussed different aspects of commercial transportation of mango, a perishable fruit.

Highlighting importance of a long term policy, the delegation told him that Multan and surrounding areas form the biggest mango producing area. This area not only sends the fruit in domestic markets but also to foreign countries where it was in great demand for its aroma and taste.—APP
