CHARLOTTE (North Carolina), May 8: Jim Furyk banished memories of his playoff loss a year ago by edging out South Africa's Trevor Immelman for the Wachovia Championship on Sunday.

The 35-year-old American clinched his 11th PGA Tour title at the first extra hole after the pair had finished regulation play level on 12-under 276 at a rain-sodden Quail Hollow Club.

Furyk holed an eight-foot par putt at the last to complete a one-under-par 71 while Immelman, a stroke ahead with one hole remaining, missed his 10-foot attempt there for a closing 70.

Australia's Adam Scott finished third at eight under after returning a 71 while twice US Open Retief Goosen fell back into a tie for 10th at five under, finding water three times at the last on his way to a quintuple-bogey nine and a 77.

Immelman, chasing his first PGA Tour victory, appeared to have the tournament within his grasp for most of the day.

Having charged back into contention with a third-round 66, he birdied the fifth and seventh before hitting a wedge to within five feet of the flag at the par-four eighth to pick up his third shot of the day.

Two ahead at the turn, Immelman ran up a double-bogey six at the par-four 11th after pushing his drive into the right rough and hitting a tree with his second shot.

He recovered, though, at the par-three 13th, a 12-foot birdie putt restoring his two-shot cushion at 12 under with playing partner Goosen having bogeyed the previous hole.

Furyk, who had struggled over the outward nine, then upped his game.

The 2003 US Open champion closed to within a stroke of the lead with his second birdie of the day at the 14th before he and Immelman picked up shots at the par-five 15th.

The experienced American parred the last three holes while the South African's late stumble took the tournament into a playoff.

US Masters champion Phil Mickelson, uncomfortable with his form all week, dropped four shots on the way to two-over-par 74 and a 72-hole total of two-over 290.

Vijay Singh, who won last year's title in a three-way playoff with Furyk and Sergio Garcia, also struggled on the last day.

He bogeyed six of the first 12 holes before ending a nightmare day with a triple-bogey at the last, a closing 81 leaving him at three over.
