LAHORE: The livestock department plans to create five compartments and two zones in the province to improve its response to foot and mouth disease.

“We are going to create five compartments and two zones for effective control of FMD in the province in the next financial year,” provincial minister Ashiq Kirmani told Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI) DG retired Maj-Gen Shahid Mahmood in a meeting here on Friday.

Kirmani explained that the focus of the Punjab government was on herd transformation, breed empowerment, tagging and traceability and disease control among animals. The department has also launched a Livestock CONNECT webpage to facilitate livestock farmers and exporters.

The meeting discussed mechanism related to animal breed improvement, vaccine production, disease control and data sharing.
