SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Situation remained tense in Ghundak area of Birmal tehsil of Lower South Waziristan on Monday owing to fear of clash between sub-tribes of Wazir tribe.

Local sources said that heavily armed members of Darikhel, Jikhel and Sirkikhel clans took up positions against each other over a land dispute, triggering fear of clash. They said that fear and uncertainty gripped locals as risk of a violent clash was looming large.

According to police sources, both parties have set up trenches and are stationed with weapons, ready to defend their respective positions.

Sources said that provocations and aggressive posturing had already begun on Sunday night, culminating in heightened tension by Monday morning.

DPO Khankhel said that the matter was taken seriously and instructions were issued to Birmal DSP and Azam Warsak SHO to intervene promptly. “Efforts are under way to resolve the issue through peaceful means and avoid any potential loss of life or property,” he said.

Police officials said that the land dispute had been bone of contention between the two groups for several years. Multiple skirmishes had been reported between them in the past. However, tension has escalated in recent months.

Local political and social leaders have expressed deep concern over the situation and urged district administration and law enforcement agencies to step in urgently. “Timely intervention is crucial to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control,” one elder said.

The residents of Azam Warsak and its surrounding areas remain in a state of anxiety owing to potential danger of armed conflict.

They appealed to provincial government, district administration and police to take swift security measures and deploy adequate force to prevent the possible clash.

Efforts are reportedly being made by tribal elders to mediate between the parties through traditional jirga channels, though the entrenched nature of the dispute continues to pose significant challenges.
