KHAIRPUR, May 6: The President of Pakistan People’s Party, Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, has alleged that the Kalabagh, Akhori and Basha dams have been planned only to irrigate lands of generals, feudal lords and influential persons.

That was one reason Gen Pervez Musharraf was so determined to construct them, Mr Shah said in his speech at a public gathering in Shadi Shaheed.

He said that the water crisis had become acute in the province, particularly in Badin district, which had almost no drinking water because canals the city received most of its water from, had dried up.

The government officials who were leading luxurious lives within the safe environment of their bungalows away from the people’s hardships, were busy harassing PPP workers instead of resolving problems, he alleged.

Mr Shah said that the country was being governed through the barrel of a gun and the ruler was blind to problems of the people.
