ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) will meet on April 18 to consider nomination of two more judges to the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court, whose strength may then swell to 15 judges.
Headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench is presently working with 13 judges.
In February, the JCP had expanded the constitutional bench to 13 members with the addition of five more judges.
Presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, the commission will consider nomination of two more judges to the constitutional bench to make it 15. The meeting will be held at the SC building at 2pm.
Also, the JCP is scheduled to meet on May 2 to consider appointment of chief justices of the Balochistan High Court and the Peshawar High Court.
At present, Justice Muhammad Ejaz Swati and Justice Attique Shah are working as acting chief justices of the BHC and PHC, respectively.
The JCP members have been asked to furnish their nominations if they wanted to propose the names of the judges to be appointed as the permanent chief justice of the respective high courts.
The members are required to submit their proposals preferably by April 28 along with the proforma under Rule 9(i) of the JCP (Appointment of Judges) Rules, 2024, as well as the biodata of the nominees and the seniority position of all the three senior most judges of the respective high courts through emails.
