SUKKUR: Five people were killed and 10 were critically injured when a speeding van and a sports utility vehicle (Vigo) collided on Mehran Highway near Degree College Karoondi, Khairpur district, on Thursday.

Locals rushed to help retrieve the dead, who included four passengers and the van driver, and the injured from the badly mangled van, and took them to government hospital in Faiz Ganj and private hospitals in Karoondi.

The dead were identified as the van driver Shoukat Bhatti, a resident of Negarja, and passengers Shams Pitafi (Ghotki), Sajjad Siyal (Zafarabad), Abdul Ghaffar Mughal (Pano Aqil) and Muzaffar Shar.

The wounded were identified as Gul Bahar Sheikh, Javed Mughal, Allah Noor Brohi, Muzaffar Shar, Boral Sochi, Mohammad Rafiq Brohi, Ms Khatoon Siyal and three others.

The rescuers said that four of the critically wounded were later transferred to a Nawabshah hospital due to lack of medical facilities in local hospitals.

The injured told media persons that the accident occurred due to over-speeding by both the vehicles involved in the accident.

The van was coming from Sukkur to Nawabshah whereas the Vigo was going from Nawabshah Sukkur.

Later, the bodies were handed over to heirs after completion of medico-legal formalities at hospitals.
