ISLAMABAD, April 30: The Qaumi Jamhoori Party (QJP) was dissolved on Sunday to revive the Tehrik-i-Istaqlal. The decision was taken through a unanimously adopted resolution at a meeting of the QJP central committee here.

Air Marshal (retired) Asghar Khan will continue to be Quaid of the party while Mohammad Ikram and former member of the National Assembly Syed Nusrat Ali Shah were elected as president and secretary-general of the party.

The meeting expressed grave concern over the increasing socio- economic problems facing the masses in the country.

Through unanimously adopted resolutions, the meeting demanded restoration of 1973 constitution in its original form, supremacy of the constitution and complete independence of the judiciary.

The participants of the meeting expressed their resolve to play their role for restoration of the constitution and protect economic rights of the people.

It was decided to re-organise the Tehrik on all levels and formulate a strategy to make it a vibrant political force. In his brief address, Air Marshal Asghar Khan said the Tehrik would maintain its identity. He said the people can no longer trust the so-called big political parties keeping in view their track record.

He said the nation wanted honest and upright leadership. He said the Tehrik-i-Istaqlal had always rendered sacrifices for democracy and rights of the masses.
