KARACHI: Three policemen and a passer-by were wounded when unknown persons threw a grenade at a police camp in Quaidabad in the small hours of Friday morning, police and rescue services officials said.

They added that unidentified suspects riding a motorcycle threw the hand grenade, apparently from the bridge, and fled.

Malir SSP Kashif Abbasi, who visited the spot, told the media that as a result of the attack, two cops were wounded while a passerby was also hurt. The injured persons were identified as Yusuf Amin, 26, Junaid Pervez, 23, Fayaz Muzamil, 26 and Zohaib Qudoos, 25.

They were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment where their condition was stated to be out of danger. The SSP said an investigation has been initiated to identify and arrest the suspects.

Meanwhile, Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) SSP Irfan Ali Bahadur told Dawn that they were treating the incident as an act of terrorism, though no one had claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Initial probe suggested that the suspects threw the grenade from the bridge, which easily landed at the police camp, the officer added.

Pedestrian killed in crossfire

A teenage boy passing by the street was shot dead in a crossfire between the police and suspected criminals in Sohrab Goth on Friday morning.

Sohrab Goth police in a statement said that “a passerby, Mohammed Umed, 18, was killed in a crossfire between police and robbers near Insaf Hospital.”

East police spokesperson said in a statement that the victim was purchasing something from a shop when he suffered bullet wounds. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. He said legal proceedings had been initiated while police were in touch with the heirs.

It was being ascertained as to whether the policemen were chasing the criminals or were involved in routine patrolling. “The incident is being probed,” said the spokesperson, adding that SP and DSP Sohrab Goth were ascertaining the causes of the firing.

SSP-East Dr Farrukh Raza said an FIR was being registered.
