LARKANA, April 29: Speakers at a seminar on Thursday said that weaker state mechanism and laws had encouraged the incidents of karo-kari in Sindh.

They said that feudal lords and police having hand in glove were out to strengthen karo-kari.

The seminar ‘we can end karo-kari’ was organized by the Pirbhat Women Development Society.

Eminent writer Sobho Gianchandani presided over the seminar.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Gianchandani called for concrete efforts to fight against the practice which was claiming scores of precious lives.

He said that numerous anti-women traditions had roots in India but no one was being killed on the pretext of ‘karo-kari’.

He said that frequency of the incidents in Sindh had now travelled to Balochistan where even Hindus were indulged in the crime.

Hakim Shah Bokhari said that Sindh had nothing to do with karo-kari as feudal lords were using karo-kari as tool to keep intact their tentacles.

He said that legislation was needed to curb the crime.

Sorath Thebo, Wahab Pindrani, Iqbal Detho, Ambreen Nawaz Shaikh and Rubina Chandio spoke on the occasion.

They said that it was quite encouraging that people who had otherwise been tight-lipped about karo-kari were openly talking against it.

They said that the response the campaign had received in Sindh was tremendous though it was simultaneously going on in six Asian counties.

A large number of women and children from Ghotki, Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Dadu and Qambar-Shahdadkot district participated in the event.
