KARACHI: A fast-moving car ran over and killed a man and his wife near Karsaz on Wednesday, police and hospital officials said.

Officials said that the incident took place at around Iftar time when Mohammed Ayaz, 35, and his wife, Aqsa, 29, parked their motorbike on the roadside to break their fast. However, a recklessly driven car hit them, killing them on the spot.

Traffic DIG Pir Mohammed Shah said that the car driver, identified as Aneeq Ayaz, was arrested and the vehicle impounded.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said that the bodies of the victims were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

Gulshan SP Ahmed Iqbal Memon told Dawn that the couple had stopped on the side of the road to break their fast, as it was Iftar time, when they were hit and killed by the recklessly driven car.

Following the incident, a mob gathered at the scene and damaged the Suzuki Cultus vehicle.

Witnesses said that the accident took place because the car driver was racing with another car.

They said that four people were in the car responsible for the accident but three of them fled the scene.

In a statement, the East police said investigation has been initiated and legal proceedings are underway.

Only on Monday, a young couple and their baby, who was born after the accident, tragically died when a water tanker hit their motorcycle at Malir Halt.

Tanker runs over, kills bike-rider

A young motorcyclist was killed by a water tanker at Naya Nazimabad on Wednesday evening, police said.

Manghopir SHO Imran Ahmed Khan identified the victim as Mohammed Ibrahim, 32.

He said that the tanker driver managed to escape, leaving behind the heavy vehicle.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
