PESHAWAR: A tree plantation campaign was launched at Peshawar Public School and College here on Saturday to promote the cause of ‘save plant, save life’.

The student’s society for clean and green environment (SSCGE) launched the drive.

Young students were sensitised to the hazards of climate change, and asked to become part of the noble cause for the humanity as planting a tree was considered as the endless charity towards contributing to a sustained environment.

Prof Iftikhar Ahmad Khan, head of the institution, said trees helped regulate the climate by providing habitat and food for various wildlife species and supporting biodiversity. “Trees lend beauty and character to the landscapes, enhancing their visual aesthetics.”

Over 2,500 saplings were planted on both the boys and girls campuses. Members of the students’ society pledged to take care of the newly-planted saplings till they grew into big trees.

Prof Shah Abid, president of SSCGE, said that he and his team would try their best to achieve the goal of planting over 5,000 trees on the campuses. “The tree plantation offered numerous benefits, from environmental and social to economic and health advantages,” he said.

Suhrab Khan, chief of student’s tree plantation campaign, said young students should come forward to advance the cause of saving the environment for posterity. “Young people could reap more benefits of trees in their future life through planting saplings.”

Later, students were given commendation certificates for their active participation in the tree plantation drive.
