Tiger dies in wildlife park

LAHORE, April 25: Another tiger died at the Lahore Wildlife Park, Raiwind, under mysterious circumstances here on Tuesday.

It has not been ascertained whether the three-year-old brown tiger died of a blood parasite — a disease which has already claimed the lives of three big cats at the Lahore Zoo.

Park deputy director Muhammad Shafqat was not available for comments. However, its management is reported having said that the big cat died of jaundice. The exact cause of death would be ascertained after autopsy.

Sources said the condition of a brown tigress also at the park was serious. They said three big cats — a white pair and one brown female — at the Lahore Zoo were also suffering from the deadly disease known as Trypanosoma.

The zoo management, however, claimed that their condition was improving.

Trypanosoma had killed scores of white and brown tigers in India and Bangladesh during the last few months.

Experts have already asked the government to take measures in other zoos in the country to protect the big cats from the disease, but it seems that the government has yet to respond to the warning.
