LAHORE: Speeding and negligence in duty have been initially identified as the major reasons behind the derailment of the Karachi-bound Shalimar Express train at Shahdara Bridge (Lahore), which suspended rail operations for hours on Friday.

“An initial report has confirmed over-speeding, allegedly on the part of the driver, who flouted the speed limit of 15 km per hour on this particular stretch of the track. The speed at the time of derailment was approximately 45 km/h,” Pakistan Railways’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amir Ali Baloch told Dawn on Saturday.

“However, the other reasons behind this accident will come out in the detailed inquiry started by a committee we have constituted,” he added. In response to a question, he stated that there was no issue with the coaches or the track, as everything appeared to be in good condition. “The bridge is also in good condition. But let’s see what our team finds in the inquiry,” he said.

“Up to 45 km/h was much more than the allowed speed of 15 km/h. This is negligence from duty as well as a violation of rules and regulations,” Mr Baloch added.

Regarding the ML-1 project, he mentioned that its approval is expected to be finalized by the end of this month, as stated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
