“I am at one of the closest points to the Rafah border crossing. I can see convoys of buses and cars that are carrying Palestinian patients who are expected to cross the border to receive medical treatment abroad,” Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Rafah in southern Gaza.

“These vehicles are lined up next to the road, waiting for permission from the Israeli military to start moving. The United Nations vehicles are at the front of the convoy to coordinate and facilitate the movement of those wounded patients.

“This significant step will help mitigate the medical crisis in Gaza’s barely functional hospitals,” he said.

The World Health Organization has been responsible for transporting those patients to the Rafah crossing, and the European Union will facilitate their movement from there.

“Based on the agreement, it is expected that there will be dozens of Palestinian fighters from various factions in this convoy of injured patients. However, we are still awaiting confirmation on this.”
