Capital dogs

Published January 17, 2025

THE civic authorities in Islamabad seem to have decided to ignore the issue of stray dogs in the federal capital. The number of stray dogs has been increasing steadily, and one has to be careful while going out for a walk or any other outdoor activity. These dogs move in packs, and tend to chase the passers-by. All this is fast turning into a big threat for all, especially for children and the elderly.

The authorities should take appropriate measures for the safety of the people. There is an immediate need to at least have dogs vaccinated as rabies can kill human beings. Sterilisation of stray dogs is also necessary so that their population remains under control.

Even after vaccination and sterilisation, the dogs should not be left to roam the streets. Instead, they should be kept in dog shelters and put up for adoption. The adoption rule should be the same as followed abroad: if the dog is not adopted for more than 10 days, it should be put to sleep as there is an influx of stray dogs in the shelters, and there are limited resources to take care of them for a long time.

I love dogs, but I also believe that managing stray dogs is crucial, and it must be done on an immediate basis. Pedes-trians are at risk as they can be chased by stray dogs while undertaking regular daily activities. Our streets and parks can be reclaimed only if there is no constant threat of being chased or bitten by a pack of stray dogs. It is good to be sympathetic towards dogs, but even better to be sympathetic towards fellow humans.
