KARACHI: A passer-by was wounded when a grenade exploded in the Lyari area on Wednesday evening, police said.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza said that passer-by Ali Muhammad Lasi, 45, suffered injuries in a blast at an under-construction plot within the remit of the Kalakot police station.

He said the Bomb Disposal Squad was called to ascertain the exact nature of the blast and after inspecting the place, the experts concluded that it was a grenade explosion.

He said while the plot owner, Abdul Wahab, denied any extortion threat, investigators learned that he had remained a ‘long-time associate’ of gangster Zahid Ladla and owed him money.

“It is probable that this attack was carried out by the Zahid Ladla gang,” opined the DIG.

The injured man was taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment.
