KARACHI: The Public Account Committee of the Sindh Assembly on Tuesday directed the provincial government to take emergent steps to evacuate over 570 buildings declared ‘dangerous’ by authorities across the city to avoid any loss of human life.

The PAC meeting, presided over by chairman Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, was informed by the Sindh Building Control Authority that a large number of people were living in dangerous buildings in the city and the SBCA was unable to get them evacuated.

The PAC directed the chief secretary to take immediate measure to get the dilapidated residential buildings vacated to avoid any tragic incident.

The director general of audit, Sindh, told the meeting that the SBCA had failed to demolish the dangerous building. He added that the presence of thousands of people in such a building could lead to tragedy at any time.

The SBCA director general said that the residents of the dilapidated buildings had demanded alternative residences before vacating their houses.

He said that as many as 570 building had been declared dangerous by the authority in Karachi, while there were 80 such buildings in Hyderabad, 81 in Mirpurkhas, 67 in Sukkur and four in Larkana.
