Call to do away with karo-kari

Published April 16, 2006

RAHIM YAR KHAN, April 15: Speakers at a seminar on karo-kari on Saturday called upon the masses to join hands to eradicate the unjust and unIslamic tradition from society. It has claimed thousands of lives in the name of honour.

The seminar was held at Jinnah Hall lawn under the auspices of the Pakistan Youth League, the Aurat Foundation and Oxfam Multan chapter.

The participants said sincere efforts were under way for the last few years to get rid of the draconian custom. Referring to the last month report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, they said, 118 people — 41 women among them — committed suicide and 43 people (including 28 women) fell prey to honour killing. Some 36 cases of karo-kari were registered.

They called upon the religious leaders, politicians, lawyers and mediamen to raise their voice against the evil of karo-kari.

Later, the participants attended a walk from the Town hall to Jinnah Hall. Holding placards and banners, they were chanting slogans against karo-kari and vani.
