RAWALPINDI: Despite widespread civil unrest and external challenge, Islamabad International Airport (IIAP) managed 324 flights and facilitated 56,473 passengers with zero operational disruption from Nov 23 to Nov 26.

A senior official of the airport management said that Islamabad International Airport (IIAP) faced considerable challenges due to widespread civil unrest and road closures in the twin cities during the period.

Despite these extraordinary circumstances, the airport demonstrated remarkable resilience, ensuring uninterrupted operations through meticulous planning, seamless coordination, and the dedication of its staff, he said.

To counter road closures and maintain staff presence, alternative access routes were promptly identified in coordination with the district administration and communicated to the passengers.

This ensured that critical personnel could reach the airport without delays, safeguarding operational efficiency throughout the period, said the senior official.

Close collaboration with airlines, led by the Chairman of the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), facilitated real-time updates to passengers regarding ticket changes and travel rescheduling.

Despite the unrest, flight schedules were maintained with only a slight dip in passenger load on Nov 24, the official said, adding that the proactive approach ensured passengers were supported and reassured during uncertain times.

During the unrest, dedicated vehicles were deployed in three shifts to transport essential staff, including Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel, ensuring round-the-clock coverage. These measures enabled teams to maintain safe and efficient management of airspace and airport operations without interruption.

The senior official said that despite external challenges, IIAP successfully managed 324 flights during the unrest period and facilitated travel for 56,473 passengers with zero operational disruptions.

Cleanliness of the terminal building was also maintained due to close coordination with the management of janitorial and glass cleaning company.

The airport’s ability to navigate this challenging period underscores the effectiveness of its contingency plans and the commitment of its workforce. The collaborative effort by airport management, airlines, and staff exemplifies IIAP’s resilience and dedication to providing uninterrupted service under adverse conditions, the senior official said.

The proactive measures and exemplary teamwork displayed during this period reflect IIAP’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence and passenger satisfaction. This experience further strengthened IIAP’s position as a reliable hub capable of adapting to and overcoming complex challenges.
