Published April 13, 2006

FAISALABAD, April 12: Civil Lines police have registered a case against four professors — Asghar Cheema, Amjad Aulak, Asghar Malik and Tanveer Khaliq — of the University of Agriculture for forcing a young student to end his life.

Nisar Ahmad, the uncle of Umar Ramiz, claimed in his application that his nephew was residing in the Afzal Hall along with another student. About six months ago, the university administration found an illegal weapon from a room of the hostel due to which five students, Umar Ramiz, Asif, Adnan, Mohsin and Waqas, were investigated. Asif was found innocent while the other four students were expelled from the university. The expelled students filed an application for reinvestigation of the matter. After that Asif was declared guilty while Adnan, Mohsin and Waqas were reinstated.

Another inquiry committee was constituted some weeks later which only called Umar and made it clear that he would not be allowed to get the university degree. The one-sided behaviour of four professors forced Umar to end his life.

No arrest has so far been made by the police despite the registration of case of Qatal-i-be-sabab which liable to be diyat under the Pakistan Penal Code.
