WATERFRONT PROJECTS

WATERFRONT PROJECTS: The shoreline in Karachi, stretching from Clifton to Keamari, offers a potential for revolutionary development. Waterfront development projects can increase tourism, create jobs, and improve the city’s image. However, concerns regarding environmental deterioration, displacement of fishing communities, and a lack of transparency in project planning must be addressed. We must ensure that development adheres to environmental standards while prioritising the wellbeing of local populations. Green spaces, public access points, as well as environment-friendly infrastructure will contribute to a dynamic, inclusive waterfront. The relevant stakeholders should engage in meaningful discussions, and implement sustainable development concepts for a flourishing and resilient metropolis.

SAVINGS ACCOUNT: I recently went to a commercial bank’s Super Highway branch to get a savings account opened for a relative. The operation manager there informed me that opening of savings accounts had been stopped by all the commercial banks till December 2024. I asked if any prior notification from a competent authority had been received by the branch. Surprisingly, the answer was in the negative. I wish to ask the State Bank of Pakistan about the logic behind such a mind-boggling decision.

ROAD CONGESTION: The University Road in Karachi is in a bad shape since the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project was launched a few years ago. During peak hours, the congestion increases manifold. The distance that people used to cover in barely 10 minutes now takes up to 30 minutes. Besides, area residents have been reporting skin diseases as well as respiratory issues. The provincial government must take necessary steps to complete the project as soon as possible to provide facilities effectively, and, in the meantime, deploy more constables to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
