RAWALPINDI: Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) Chairman Malik Shoaib Awan on Monday said that there were over 250 government schools in Rawalpindi district which are in the low-performing category and these schools should be made functional with the help of the private sector.

He said PEF had selected individuals and institutions on strict merit to run these educational institutions.

He stated this at a function organised by the foundation at Government Degree College for Boys Satellite Town in which private sector educationists and heads of organisations from seven districts participated. They will run low-performance government schools on the public-private partnership model.

Certificates of appreciation were also given to the teachers who showed high performance in the private sector. Apart from Rawalpindi, participants from the districts of Murree, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin and Bhakkar attended the event.

Speaking on the occasion, the PEF Chairman said according to the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, out-of-school children will be given priority in admissions to the low-performance government.

He said the government will pay a fee of Rs1200 per month to the children admitted with the support of the private sector in government schools with unsatisfactory performance and such children will also get an opportunity to get education.

He said in 2016, around 4000 low performing government schools were run on the public-private partnership model and now more than 5000 more schools will be run on the same model.
