LAHORE: The Pakistan Army asserted its supremacy at the National Inter-Departmental Karate Championship, dominating the competition with eight gold medals across men’s and women’s categories, held here on Wednesday.

The Army team topped the standings, with Wapda and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) trailing behind in second and third places, respectively.

In the men’s category, Army karatekas Usman Shafique (below 50kgs), Shams-ud-Din (below 60kgs) , Shahzeb (above 85kgs), Mohammad Farhan Rasheed (below 55kgs), Mubarak Ali (below 67kgs) and Irshad Ali (individual kata) secured gold medals.

The Army team also excelled in team events, winning both the team kata and kumite competitions.

In the women’s category, Army athletes Ani­ta Batool, Hina Khan, Farida Khan, Mah Gul, Arzo and Nazanin claimed gold medals in the below 45kgs, 68kgs, 50kgs, 61kgs, above 68kgs and individual kata categories, respectively.

The Army women’s team also dominated the team kata and team kumite events.

Wapda’s Saadi Ghulam Abbas won the lone gold medal in the below 85kgs category, while HEC’s Wasi Haider secured gold in the below 75kgs category.

Laiba Zia from HEC earned a gold medal in the women’s below 55kgs category.
