LARKANA, April 2: The Leader of Opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Mr Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, has moved an adjournment motion in the assembly over the alleged torture of Riaz Kalhoro, a trainee navy technician, in Karachi and Dr Safdar Sarki, general secretary of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz.

Talking to Dawn here on Sunday, he said the carving of word ‘MQM’ on the chest of Riaz Kalhoro had created a wave of insecurity and terror in the society.

He said the matter should be discussed on the floor of the assembly, adding that the Sindh government should disclose the whereabouts of Dr Sarki.

Answering a question, he said PPP legislators would not visit the Chief Minister’s House to discuss budget proposals if they were invited by the chief minister because when last year the party had given budget proposals to the then finance minister, the same had not been incorporated into the budget document.

He said the PPP would send its proposals to the government but apprehended that these would not be accommodated.

He said that during the regime of Gen Pervez Musharraf, the practice of seeking opinion from a cross-section of the society had been stopped.

Mr Khuhro said the government had proposed additional budget of Rs61 billion for defence but it had earmarked only Rs5 billion for the Khushhal Pakistan Programme.

He regretted that the government had yet not released Rs5 billion announced for development schemes in Hyderabad but it had okayed Rs12 billion for Karachi. He termed this hypocrisy.

About demolition of ancient villages in Karachi and Hyderabad, he said mere calling of the revenue record of the villages could not satisfy victims. He said the Sindh government could not deny responsibility for the action because it was being done under its nose.

He said the PPP would table a motion in the coming session of the Sindh Assembly to discuss the issue.

M Khuhro said the rise in prices of essential commodities, unemployment, poor law and order situation, shortage of health facilities and low education standard showed the failure of the government.

He claimed that the present government had launched not a single major development project in Sindh. He said the government was only making hollow promises with people about development.
