THIS is with reference to the report ‘Balochistan plunges deeper into militancy vortex’ and the editorial ‘Balochistan attacks’ (Aug 27). The loss of so many lives in a single day has left the nation anguished and alarmed in equal measure. The incident is a stark reminder of the province’s precarious security situation and the system’s utter failure to protect its citizens.

Balochistan is already grappling with multiple challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and a lack of basic infrastructure. The targeted killings have added fuel to the fire, creating an atmosphere marked by fear, insecurity and hopelessness. The province’s fragile social fabric is on the verge of collapse.

Both provincial and federal govern-ments must acknowledge the gravity of the situation and take comprehensive measures to address it. A thorough investigation into the targeted killings must be conducted and the perpetrators be brought to justice. Security measures must be enhanced, particularly in vulnerable areas, and local stakeholders, including tribal leaders and civil society organisations, must be engaged to address grievances and promote dialogue. The root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment and a serious lack of education facilities, need to be addressed, and compensation should be provided to the families of the victims.

Moreover, Islamabad must recognise the historical and political context of Balochistan’s issues and work towards a political solution that addresses the province’s long-standing demands for autonomy, resources and rights.

The people of Balochistan deserve peace, security and prosperity. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure their safety and wellbeing. The government, political parties and civil society organisations must come together to find a comprehensive solution to the grave issues afflicting the province. We are one nation. The pain of one person should be felt by the whole nation.
