HYDERABAD: Speakers at a programme stressed the importance of educating children in their mother tongue and then introducing them to other languages as the mother tongue would help them connect with their roots.

Sindhi writer and former chairperson of Sindhi Language Authority (SLA), Dr Fahmida Memon, said while delivering a lecture at Government Girls Degree College in Tandojam on Saturday that education was key to awareness, self-confidence, creativity and critical thinking.

She said the first school in Tandojam was established in 1920 and her father was the first teacher posted there. It was highly important to educate children in their mother tongue and then introduce them to other languages. Learning Sindhi would help them connect with their roots, she said.

She highlighted significance of women’s employment in improving financial condition of families.

Sindh Human Rights Commission’s chairperson Iqbal Detho commended efforts of political leadership of Tandojam, particularly Sharjeel Inam Memon, and individuals for their contribution to improving education. He encouraged female students to be part of youth networks and become future leaders like Dr Fahmida Memon.

Principal Government Girls Degree College Alia Anwar Memon praised Dr Fahmida for her outstanding service to Sindhi community, Sindhi language and youth.
